Her stage name might sound like a made-up, light-hearted tune, but this Londoner of Filipino heritage writes songs that are much deeper and more intimate than this name suggests. Born in 2000, Beabadoobee (her parents call her Beatrice) embodies a new generation of artists who favour guitars and other authentic sounds rather than software-generated music. She’s a gifted singer, composer and guitarist and her many influences include Elliott Smith, Kimya Dawson, Mazzy Star, Yeah Yeahs Yeahs and Pavement. Her first album, Fake It Flowers (2020), contemplates her many obsessions and weaves slacker rock, shoegaze and pop combined with an incredible voice reminiscent of Hope Sandoval. This plus her 2021 EP, Our Extended Play, has established her as a rising star.
