Gaz Coombes sings “long live the strange” on his new album, Turn the Car Around, released this winter. The shaggy singer and guitarist of Supergrass has always had a weakness for antiheroes and his fourth solo album is no exception. By exploring glam rock and soul, the Oxford native’s music is more curated than at his beginnings and the timbre of his voice has an impressive solidity while retaining real passion during his live shows. Just like his friends The Last Shadow Puppets, he’s able to alternate between sensitive ballads and faster, more exuberant songs. Like Damon Albarn or the Gallagher brothers, this British fortysomething is yet another confirmation that there’s life after Britpop.
