Signed to the Berlin label City Slang, these five Tuareg musicians are masters of desert blues, creating haunting timeless songs with their hypnotic guitar sound. Their fascinating draw is particularly tangible when they play live, but it’s certainly also present on their three albums: the eponymous Imarhan (2016), Temet (2018) and Aboogi (2022). Each is spellbinding and majestic. Three works of art where the importance of their Algerian ancestors is discernible (the group is based in Tamanrasset) as is the influence of the modern sounds of the western world, combined with an immaculate sense of rhythm and rock. Imarhan in Tamashek (one of the Berber languages) means “those who love each other, who are together and who are sincere”. A great manifesto.
