When Shaga sings the line “Give me five minutes and I’ll take off / All by myself on the dancefloor”, on his single Besoin de personne (“I don’t need anybody”), it’s like he’s describing the effect of his live performance. The title might make you think of a song by the same name by French singer Véronique Sanson, but there’s no connection; Shaga is an unusual young rapper who plays guitar. You just have to watch the live version of Whisky sans glace on YouTube (recorded in someone’s garden) and you’ll be bowled over and want to know everything about him. That’s assuming you don’t know him already from his 2020 EP Kérosène, or maybe even from his older songs when he went by the moniker of Shagadelic (alluding to the Austin Powers catchphrase). His eclectic and spontaneous music is a balm for French rap.
