Somewhere between folk, ambient and shoegaze, American Helen Ballentine’s light touch is at the helm of the Skullcrusher project. Her hushed tones gently embellish her emotional, somewhat gothic songs, a musical play of shadow and light. Her presence at Rock en Seine is the perfect occasion to discover the live versions of her repertoire before the October release of her first album called Quiet the Room on the always impeccable Secretly Canadian label. It’s hard to imagine that such dark music originated beneath the Californian sun – and yet this singer-songwriter lives in Los Angeles where she creates music that’s unreal, reflecting on her past, her unsatiated desires, her regrets and her hopes. A breathtaking discovery.
