Its name is synonymous with what is commonly called darksynth, a brutal electro that mixes dark atmospheres, synths and sounds from metal and horror movies.
And yet, Carpenter Brut, on display in the 2018 edition of Rock en Seine, it’s more than that. You’ve probably met him, at least on record, with his first EP, gathered in 2015 in the Trilogy compilation. On the console, you have probably heard his music trying to survive in Hotline Miami 2, The Crew, or Furi.
Carpenter Brut is French, and he just released, at the end of February, Leather Teeth, his first real studio album. A soundtrack. That of an imaginary film in 1987, a cheerleader (the piece “Cheerleader Effect”), a look exchanged at the turn of a “Sunday Lunch” that turns into “Monday Hunt”. A coming of age ultra dark, a horror film between Street Trash, Brain Dead, The Thing, and House, which would be the beginning of a trilogy at the same time colorful (the rose actually, on the cover, its appearance in the world Carpenter Brut) and deeply unhealthy.
But it’s really on stage that his music becomes a show. An electric and electrifying show. Demon, necessarily. Intense, obviously. But also … Disco. Yes, you read correctly. “She’s a maniac, maniac on the floor, and she’s dancing like she’s never danced before.” Thus ends the concerts of Carpenter Brut. By a reprise of the Flashdance tube, interpreted by Michael Sembello and released in 1983. Surprising? Yes, but in fact, no time.
Carpenter Brut: “I do not remember seeing the movie with my parents, so I think I had to discover this song on the radio, or because my parents had the record at home. do a cover for the concert at La Cigale in 2016. History to make a little something more for a date that was important. In Paris, moreover, I love the word “Maniac” and I love this piece “. So is simply the idea of a separate recovery. And a highlight in the story of Carpenter Brut: “By choosing this song I was sure it would make people laugh, I did not think it would make them crazy, though, haha. that it’s a pleasure for everyone, for me and the public “. We must indeed see the public become hysterical, become other, to understand.
Carpenter Brut is the story of a fantasy era. That of permanent, studded bracelets, the most complete decadence. That of Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe, Van Halen too. But also, strangely, the story of a title a little cheesy, a little underestimated, brought up to date by a punk craftsman. Carpenter Brut, more disco than it looks? In any case, “I like the original and I think that my recovery is the best song of the set”.
Carpenter Brut and many others will be present at Rock en Seine on August 24th, 25th, and 26th at the gates of Paris!
