Even if the title of their 2002 debut album urged us to “turn on the bright lights”, these Manhattan rockers have always preferred to play in the shadows, in the dark corners of postpunk where only pale rays of hope manage to slip through. Paul Banks (vocals guitar), Daniel Kessler (guitar vocals) and Sam Fogarino (drums) began as devoted admirers of Joy Division and the Chameleons. Over the course of their albums they have managed to find their own sound and move beyond any comparisons. Although there’s been no follow up to The Other Side of Make-Believe (2022), their consummate live performances never fail to impress, as those who saw them at Rock en Seine during their earlier appearances in 2011 and 2015 can attest.
