A devotee of synthpop and darkwave, John Maus is one of the more singular figures on the American experimental scene. It’s not just his voice – so deep when he sings it feels like it’s coming from the depths of the universe (think Ian Curtis of Joy Division) but also his unusual path: he taught philosophy at the University of Hawaii and earned a PhD in political science, all while pursuing his music career. Now 45, the Minnesota native had a dry patch after releasing Addendum in 2018. This year marks his return to the stage, and he’s announced that a new album is ready to go. There’s no doubt this intense songwriter still has a few surprises up his sleeve.
