Opening slots for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize, a growing influence on new bands such as Man/Woman/Chainsaw, and three albums that stand as masterclasses in the breadth of their musical range: that’s how you might sum up, in just a few lines, the colourful journey of this Cambridge group formed in 2018. They managed to bounce back after their lead singer and guitarist left in 2022 to preserve his mental health. BCNR, as they’re known to fans, are far from done dazzling us with their multifaceted music, initially rooted in deconstructed post-rock and now leaning towards a baroque folk-pop-rock vein that would not be out of place alongside Arcade Fire in its ambition and instrumental richness.
