A reliable indicator for understanding the influences of a band is their choice of cover songs. Before having enough original compositions to fill an entire concert, most artists add tracks written by others to their setlist – choices that reveal much about their musical upbringing. The Dynamite Shakers, a (very) young band from the French Vendée, have already covered the likes of Gene Vincent, Stray Cats, Dogs, and The Kinks. Powered by a bubbling energy that explodes on stage, reminiscent of the Arctic Monkeys’ early fervour, the fourpiece seems to have been nurtured on the entire history of rock from its origins. Their debut album, Don’t Be Boring, released last March, has solidified their classy songwriting, which leans on the past to invent today’s rock.
