Yoa first came to the stage as a dancer, actress, and director, but music was never far behind – she started playing piano in her childhood and cites Nina Simone, Lana Del Rey, Rosalía, and Madonna among her inspirations. Strong women, just like her. Born to a Swiss father and a Cameroonian mother, she threw herself body and soul into music during the lockdown at the age of 25, and it’s one of the rare times the global pandemic had a positive effect. We can discover her nonchalant but expressive voice, with an elegant melancholy, on her two EPs, Attente (2021) and Chansons tristes (2022). These are soft pop songs in style (her arrangements, her melodies) and sharp in substance (her uncompromising lyrics), like the recent Matcha Queen.
