Those who find French pop too serious, too academic and overly predictable should take a listen to the quirky fantasies of Bonnie Banane. This eccentric stage name belongs to a singer-songwriter born in Brittany in the late 80s who’s also a former student of the prestigious Paris drama school, the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique, so it’s no surprise there’s a theatricality to her music. Following an uninhibited debut album, Sexy Planet (2020), this French artist continues to surprise with the playful anti-establishment tracks on her second album, Nini, a perfectly balanced mix of pop, electro and R&B, due for release early April. Extravagant and extroverted, she comes to us from the same musical family as Les Rita Mitsouko’s Catherine Ringer and avant-garde singer Brigitte Fontaine.
